Serial Number is 899017
Hope this helps.

Post pictures on imgur.com and link them here. Well, I’d suggest starting your own thread. What was your uncle’s name?

Your description and the rifle's serial number is a strong indication of USMC issuance. I checked and the Springfield Research Service has no record of your rifle's serial number. So one can only speculate who it may have been issued to or where it may have served.

The rifle's serial number was struck in July, 1918. So it would have been issued in about August, 1918, and may have made it to France just before the war ended. Obviously, it served in both WWI and WWII.

Congratulations!

Default Update on Serial Number

I had been looking at the serial number wrong it is 895017 not 899017 it would help if I had my glasses on when reading it. Maybe this new information could shed some light to whether it is USMC issue or not but the barrel does have U.S.M.C. 4-42 with circle S under date and receiver does have the hatcher hole on the left side. With on finger groove forearm.

Thanks for the correction. The serial number was struck about three days earlier in July, 1918. But the Springfield Research Service still has no record of that serial number. So my previous description still applies.

Thanks again for the correction.
