Default Odd US M5A1 (CMP) bayonet -Alum handle?

Hi Fellows,

Hope you can help me out.
I bought a Korean war issue bayonet for a late model M-1 I have.
The hilt is marked U.S. M5A1 MILPAR COL The company is listed a original maker of this model.
As some of you might know the South store bayonet box's are sealed now!

So because I'm a kid at heart I opened the box as soon as I paid for it. This bayonet has a aluminum handle
The older staff member's said some have come through there like that in the past & "might" have added value.

I could not find any info on why it would have a Aluminum grip. It would be awful cold to use in a Korean winter war campaign!
Looks just like a standard model. Looking for more info! I can always paint the grip black.

Thanks for any help,
broom

Google "Bayonet Points" by the late Gary Cunningham, it should have the info you are looking for. The M5 bayonets did not appear until the Korean War was near it's end.

Hi Fellows,

Thanks for the reply's & site info! The best I did was to locate Gary's book on line!
Still no mention of any with a aluminum grip!
I'll try to locate more info.

Best to all of you,
broom

Could be Turkish in origin as they made bayonets for the M1 with aluminum grips. Here is one on sale on ebay right now - https://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-Metal-...IAAOSw6jNaxsJl

Interesting! CMP did get some Turkish Garands, maybe a few bayonets were in the shipment? Rare bird indeed!

Hi Guys,

Thanks ALL for the added info!
The sheath is marked in pen, the letters looks Greek to me!

I paid $67 + $6.70 tax or $73.70 so I have to watch & see if it it sells for more then the original CMP cost! LOL We win some & loose some!

Best wishes to all,
broom
