Default Would you scope the 40x?

Since these rifles don't have sights, what are your feelings about drilling and tapping? From the descriptions, it is doubtful that the rifles will be in collectible condition. Your comments please, on scoping the USMC and/or HB.

I believe you'll find that the 40X rifles are already drilled and tapped for bases. Both modern types and Unertl style can be used. The modern bases will probably need a touch of shiming but nothing major.

I plan on making a 22 clone of my f class rifle, so a scope is definitely in the future...

Weaver makes bases for the 40X and they should already be drilled and tapped. I ordered one set of sights, and two rifles. I think you know what I am thinking

I found this on another site regarding the weave bases:

"The correct Weaver top mount bases for the 40X are numbers ís 35 front & 36 rear."

Does that sounds correct?

My club has a 22/F class match so I was thinking of using mine for that purpose.
I wonder who makes a bipod that will fit into the hand stop rail?

I thought the 722 and 700 short action all took the same base.

I put a Redfield base on mine before CMP sold the sights last time. Oh and mine is a 722 action type.

I was fortunate to find a set of Redfield International irons for my 40X, but currently shoot it with a Simmons 6-18x40 Pro Air air rifle scope mounted in the above listed Weaver bases and rings. It is really cool to shoot .22 casings off of toothpicks at 25 yds and beyond, and I usually win enough for beer money against the uninformed who dare bet against the 40X.

My 40x will be a trainer for my duty 700, so it most definitely will get a scope. I like irons, but I need a trainer.

I am just torn between keeping the wood and installing a Unertl or Lyman or making a "clone" of my duty rifle with a fiberglass stock and modern scope.

Modern rifles are more accurate, but wood and steel have soul!
