Default Things to check on a clean used TRW barrel

Just picked up a clean chrome lined TRW barrel and aside from ME readings what do I look at to assure its good to go on a receiver? Any tests or other measurements? I bought it to complete a parts kit as I haven't got a receiver yet.

Thanks for any help with this

Look down the barrel from the chamber end and make sure the chrome lining isn't starting to peel at the throat.

Ok...didnt get the barrel yet, but if it is peeling, is it toast? Is TRW known for this? Not going to compete with it, just a plinker..

Anything else to look at?

thanks

I will leave the first question to the M14 'smiths on the board. The problem is not TRW specific, all the GI chrome lined barrels can have this issue. I had an H&R barrel with peeling chrome at the throat at one point.

I have bought eight USGI standard barrels three new. The areas I was most concerned with aside from ME and TE was the crown, gas port and throat. If you can take the barrel to a smith who has a bore scope, it will give a good indication of barrel condition, chrome flaking, pitting and rifling condition. Examine the area around the gas port for pitting, if the port is sharp and well defined its good to go. The crown should be free from dings and gouges.

The shoulder is an area that needs attention, it will determine timing, but without the receiver its a real guess.

Even with flaking, the barrel will be fine for a plinker.

do a google search for "USGI chrome lined barrel throat wear pictures" this will give you an idea of what you don't want the throat to look like.
