Default #1 of 5 FGs

After looking at the boxes for 2 months, finally began the opening process. Significant shoulder repair so had to wait....

Photos of #1 of 5 added. Reformatted for readability.

1773542 Springfield
Barrel: SA 5-52, ME 1.2, TE 4 (tag said 2 and 4+)
Receiver: repark but no pitting
Chamber: white
Op Rod: Late SA
Stock: color matches, dark walnut, no grime on it. Stock has well done repair in lower lockup area (new shims about 3/16" wide with 2 brass pins on each side. So the lockup is NUKE tight. Almost couldn't open it after getting it to unlatch. Pressure starts right at the end of the trigger. Will need a mallet to close this one. Gonna take quite a rap. Deep struck R.I.A on left rear of stock. Remnants of boxed cartouche.
Proof marks: One nice circled P (non serif) near end of pistol grip. Remnants of original P about an inch from trigger guard.
Disk on the pistol grip with number "69" (rack number)
Lower band: flat w/roll pin
Rear Sights: Post war sights but possibly a WRA base (distinct machine marks on sides). DRC/NHC (E/W).
Front Sight: 0.8" with machine marks, prob WRA.
Housing: Late SA (not disassembled yet)
Hammer: -5 SA hammer
Safety: SA-11 safety
Guide: with wings
Guard: stamped
Gas cylinder: Wide base with "P" (and punch mark above and below "P") on the bayonet lug.
Gas Lock: Round
Gas Screw: Poppet with P and X.
Butt Plate: Always lost on the butt plates. Not WRA, 20% wear on edges.
Internals: appear late, not disassembled yet.

Overall a rifle that could have graded as a lower end SG. A mixmaster probably parts rifle for sure. Perfect play in front hand guard. Cylinder slightly loose. With great lockup and rear hand guard clearance, this may be a real sleeper shooter after a little tweaking. Should get to #2 soon.

Disc in the P-grip? Sounds like it could be a Danish stock then.

Thumbs up

Might bit a little on the low-end of the FG description (can almost see my reflection on that muzzle!), but not at all too bad. Plus that stock has plenty-O-character.

Good grab.

That is a great looking FG. I wish CMP would stop reparking the dang receivers and just send them out with whatever finish is on them.

Look forward to seeing the other four!

Yeah, me too on the reparking. This one is a very thin park.

You guys agree on the front sight being WRA?, and maybe the rear sight base because of machining marks? Will disassemble further later....

Great pictures!! Agree that CMP should leave the receivers as they received them.

Front sight may be WRA or IHC...don't see any punchmark. Get a measurement and that should get you pretty close to determining what it is.

I think I see a punchmark on the left side of the sight base...looks WRA to me.

Buttplate is SA.
