But as to whale oil being used in Automatic Transmission Fluid, I have heard the same thing from my Dad who was an Automotive Engineer. He said that the reason they called the product "Dexron 2" was that the original "Dexron" formula included whale oil which had been banned - so they had to come out with a different formula ATF that would work in all the older cars as well as the new ones.

Sperm whale oil was included specifically to prevent corrosion of transmission parts.

Was heavily into fixing restoring and daily driving vintage muscle cars for 20+ years. Whale oil was used in automotive applications:


Press ctrl+F and type in 'whale' to find the reference. That's as a gear lube but I am sure it was used in other oils for cars too. Quite certain it was in ATF.
