Back then you can save and build an M1 from a $100 barreled receiver from CMP, $50 seconds stock from Dupage, $ 170 parts kit ( complete minus bolt internals ) also from Dupage. I was able to assemble 2 , should have bought more of those barreled receivers or parts kit.

My first trip to the north store was a few months after that. Those were certainly the good old days. Trouble is; when the service grade mail order Garands run out THESE days will be the good old days.

I wouldn't feel bad. I've been part of the DCM/CMP since 1987 and more than a dozen trips to the South Store since they opened. I remember a number of trips walking right by the Carbines, B/R's & 1903/A3. I was a Garand guy all along. Finally got an 03 on the last run and scored a carbine in the final days. I'm thinking positive that the CMP still has a few surprises in store for us.

I joined a little over a year ago and in that time a bunch of guns are not available anymore.
