Default Colt slides and the pony

To the all knowing what is the deal with the pony on the rear of some Colt slides most that I have seen it is in the front of the Colt & Hartford in the center of the slide?? Thanks for any replys

Early ones were on the rear, really early ones had a circle around the donkey, by the time of black army production it was in the middle.
