I would never change the stock that is on that rifle, nor would I not consider it "correct".

Wear and condition seem to match enough for this one to have possibly been with the rifle since the beginning. Maybe it slipped through the cracks! I'm on the side of chance with this one.

Oh Iím not changing anything. Itís like GAW/NFR overlap on the M1... no one really knows the serial numbers where the transition took effect. Seems this is a similar situation.

I concur with Mike D. I do not recommend changing the stock unless you just coincidentally happened to have a correct stock and buttplate in matching condition. I cannot rule out the possibility that the stock might be original. At the Remington factory, nothing went to waste. So if the stock got rejected and re-worked, it could show up on a later rifle.

Couldnt tell from pic but was buttswivel milled and if milled what finish?

Yeah, I wouldn't change a thing unless you knew beyond a doubt something was wrong. And it doesn't sound like the latter is the case.
