Update:

To my surprise, the seller actually replied that he'd be willing to meet in person and asked me for my phone number.

It's a 6 hour drive. Are there any payment methods that would insure me against a fraud? Maybe PayPal?

Thanks!

Steve

If he will meet you in person just take cash. Make sure to meet in public place.

If not mentioned before.. If he is from a different state I believe you would need to go through an FFL even face to face.

PayPal is easy to rip people off. He could use a card to fund and then file a charge back with cc company. Then PP would pull the money from you.

To be honest there's not a whole lot in existence on earth that I'd be willing to drive 6 hrs for. Maybe a rare car. Nothing shippable. I'd say you'll give him a $200 deposit or some other good faith amount, cc through PayPal, so it can be back charged. Do not use your own bank accounts.
Ship the receiver to my FFL. Then I'll pay you the rest to ship the rest once receiver is in hand. I don't know if I'd drive 12 hrs for a free Garand to be honest. Itd have to be a damn unique one.

+1!

Only exception being if you're an FFL holder (such as type 01, 03, or 07). However PA and/or MA may have additional restrictions you have to comply with. Know your laws and keep it legal!

I agree with many of the other respondents to your question. If it is the real thing and nothing is materially defective it's a great deal! I'd want to see it in person first to verify, that would reduce the need for a refund option.

Also carefully inspect for a welded receiver, commonly referred to as a reweld. Ask for the SN and cross reference it with the letters and numbers at the front of the receiver on the right side. Google.the term "reweld" and it will show some pics of other things to look for.

I would buy that WRA M1 Garand in heartbeat for that price. If you want to pass on it, let me know!

For the price it seems too good to be true....be cautious!
Not sure if you are aware but be on the look out for a welded receiver. Educate yourself on the correct drawing/revision numbers for the Winchester receivers and make sure it is correct.
Here is a discussion on welded receivers and some visual clues to look for....good luck!
