SEE: https://www.rmda.army.mil/foia/RMDA-FOIA-Contact.html

Ya might try somethin' like "I request all information found in the Army File of the Department Of Defense (DOD) Small Arms/Light Weapons Registry for Pistol, .45ACP, M1911 (NSN: 1005-00-575-0004), Serial # XXXXX or Pistol, .45ACP, M1911A1 (NSN: 1005-00-726-5655), Serial # XXXXXXX."

Until the late 90's, it was in Japan.
Now that name was a blast from the past. In the mid 60s we lived not too far from there although we never went to that location. Attended school at both sections of Camp Zama. The area where the elementary school was is now called Sagamihara Housing Area. Sagamihara was used all over that area and we had to pick up a State Dept student on 56( 16 ) before turning onto 51. Wonder if your 1911 at one time was at Camp Zama?

Thumbs up

Apparently yesterday was a busy day for Mr. Basta. I, too, got his response to my FOIA request regarding my M1911. Then this morning I received an amended response that added "annual weapon serial number reconciliations records" to the info:

"Information was found in the Army File of the Department of Defense (DOD) Small Arms/Light Weapons Registry for an M1911 Colt 45 automatic pistol (NSN: 1005-00- 673-7955), serial number 585776. This weapon first appears in the registry on April 4, 1995 as a weapon serial number reconciliations record by the Center of Military History Support Center Anniston, Anniston, Alabama. Additional records show annual weapon serial number reconciliations records by the Center of Military History Support Center Anniston, Anniston, Alabama on January 27, 2003, February 6, 2003, January 26, 2004, November 9, 2004, June 28, 2006, July 11, 2006, August 29, 2006, August 25, 2009, April 20, 2010, January 31, 2011, January 17, 2012, January 17, 2013, January 8 2014, January 15, 2015, January 12, 2016, January 12, 2017, and January 6, 2018. The next record shows this weapon as being shipped by the Center of Military History Support Center Anniston, Anniston, Alabama on January 29, 2018 to the HQ US Army Tank Automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM), Civilian Marksmanship Program, Anniston, Alabama where it was received the same day. This weapon was last reported as being shipped outside the DOD on January 29, 2018 by the HQ US Army TACOM, Civilian Marksmanship Program, Anniston, Alabama to the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP). There are no other transactions involving this stock number and serial number in the DOD Small Arms/Light Weapons Registry."

I suppose that means it was in the museum system, although I have no idea if it was on display anywhere. Previously, through the "Shipment info on pistols" thread in this forum, I found out this:

"Almost certainly went to the Army Reserve Depot in South Schenectady, NY on either 07 FEB 1919 or 03 MAR 1919. Slight chance it went to a camp somewhere else, but 99%+ went to NY at that time."

Sure wish I could find out all the places it went between 1919 and 1995, but I'm happy to find out as much as I have.

Rick

see above, D.R. has the links top of the page.

I would be very pleased to know if it was at Camp Zama - would have been an NCO, Officer's gun or most likely an MP ! And I knew MP's that had been stationed there if I remember right.

It says, "This weapon first appears in the registry on October 24, 1997."

I dont know much about this stuff but why no other records of it before that?
Obviously its been around the army since the 40s.

In the automated age back in the 90's if the firearm was on a unit property book the serial numbers were tracked but not necessarily the "national" level. Once they got into the depot system TACOM/AMC level they would show up. Though you would have expected it would have information on who turned it over to the "Depot" system.

Very interesting...

CMP 1911 did, in fact, receive at least one additional shipment of M1911s/M1911A1s on SEPTEMBER 24, 2019.

just recieved this today, looks like the FOIA path used for the M17's isnt correct for the 1911's!!!!!!! I just recieved this today!!!

In regard to your FOIA request for a Colt 1911A1 pistol, The USAMC LDAC is no longer the custodians of the Department of Defense (DOD) Small Arms/Light Weapons Registry. Your request will be referred to the ASALT- PEO-EIS organization that has purview. The POC for your request is james.a.baxley2.civ@mail.mil

Someone with a Marine corps rebuild needs to Foia MCB Albany or Barstow as appropriate. The Supply rebuild center should have a record from which unit the pistol was sent from...probably ordinance maintenance bn. worth a shot.
