My Dad was a 2nd class signalman in the Navy during WWII he served on LST 471 from 1943 to 1946. They were assigned to the Pacific and the Ship and crew earned Five Battle Stars for landing they performed in a combat situation. LST 471 participated in five landings in as many as 14 months. There jobs on the ship were not what you might see in a movie. They carried Marines and US Army, Like all LST's they carried Tanks, Trucks, Jeeps, Heavy Guns, Seabee units, and their equipment, Dozers, Graders etc. The crew of LST usually did not carry a 1911 Pistol.
When VJ day came and the war was finally over, Like all other men in the service LST 471 was looking forward to returning home.
Instead they were one of the ships ordered to go island to island to pick up Japanese, who either survived, surrendered or were captured.
They Transported these Japanese, to the Philippines to be processed and returned to Japan.
This was not a pleasant assignment. They would bring as many as 400 Japanese on at a time and put them in the tank deck for transport. Marine, and Navy crew were assigned to guard the Japanese.
During this time Dad carried a 1911, only when he took his turn on guard duty. Funny detail dad told me that he doubt he would have been able to fire it if he had to. No one ever showed him how to operate it. He did say for the most part the Japanese behaved.
