Need help removing stripper clip guide

Hi,

Have a Springfield M1A in an EBR stock. Trying to install a Fulton scope base. Well.. it seems like the hole in the heel of the receiver inside is way to small to get a punch into to take out the roll pin. All the reading I have done says it’s 3/32 but it is not! I can’t even get a 1/16 in the hole.

Any thoughts?
Drill it out from top? I’f so what size bit?
Cut the guide apart? Cheap enough to replace if I ever need to.

You are supposed to punch the pin out from the inside of the receiver.

Thanks... I guess I might not have been real clear! I know how it is SUPPOSED to come out! The issue is that the hole in the back of the receiver is TINY compared to what it should be. Everyone says to use a #3 or 3/32 punch. NO WAY... I have a 1/16th that won't even fit in the hole.

At this point, I think I will put the barreled action in a vice on the mill, and slowly just mill the guide away. Does anyone know if it is hardened/heat treated?

Kroil in hole to loosen, Note angle of pin. Do you have a punch that does not have an angle on it?

Thanks again.... I did put Kroil on it originally. I see the angle, HAD a straight punch.

Again, the issue is... the hole in the receiver is TO SMALL! I am guessing it never got sized correctly during manafacturing.

Just taking a 1/16th punch and looking at it with a magnifying 'hood' the punch does NOT fit in the hole, even at the right angle. it will NOT go into the hole to engage the pin from inside the bottom of the receiver.

Does anyone know if the stripper clip guide is heat treated/hardened? Just want to know what to expect when I go to mill it.

A gunsmith , in the know, would move the clip guide to the left shearing the pin and then remove the pieces. Or counter drill from the receiver interior until you reach the pin and then drive it out.

Thanks nf1e. I have thought of that as well... Was very concerned trying to counter drill the receiver. I think it is also hardened? I would much rather sacrifice the guide, then the receiver!

I will continue to try some things before attacking it with the mill!

If you are careful with a direct even square strike, the only thing that will be sacrificed is the pin. Come in on an angle with your hammer and all bets are off.
