Default How to Preserve The M4 bayonet?

How and what should I use to clean and maintain the leather handle on the M4 bayonet?
There is still some grease on the blade to clean off. It smells like diesel was used to clean the handle. I would like to get read of the diesel smell and cleaned up and recondition the leather to preserve for the future.
Also there is a slight gap between some of the leather rings. They are still tight. Is this just from the leather drying some?

I've used saddle soap and Pecards Antique Leather Dressing with great success on my bayonet handles, leather holsters etc.

Pecards is good stuff, but will most likely darken the leather. A better product is Renaissance Wax (after you clean it).
