Default 7.62X 51 or .308

Are all Springfield Armory M1A's chambered in .308 Win. or are early one's chambered in 7.62 x 51 NATO? Mine was manufactured in August 87 and is stamped 7.62 on the receiver. Eddie

If there is any question in your mind, call SAI customer service, they will answer any questions you have about your rifle. You can give them the serial number and barrel information and they will help you out.

Not that long ago I purchased some unmarked 5 round magazines from someone who claimed they were SAI, but they were unmarked. The seller contacted SAI, who e mailed me a copy of the receipt from 1994 with the sellers name on the invoice which proved them to have been unmarked and sold by them.

In my mind, that is pretty good customer service.

Depends on who made the barrel if its marked TRW, SA, Wincherster, H&R, SAK, CA, I know I'm missing 2 other USGI barrel makers, they are all a 7.62 NATO chambering. For some time and this includes the current M1A rifles they use a .308 Winchester chambering too keep reloaders out of trouble, but the bore is supposed too be of NM spec.

Yes, and that has too do with the pressure curve of the ammo.

H&R is a USGI tube, with a 7.62mm NATO chambering. However you can still shoot commercial ammo in it as long as its not light magnum, sabot or accelerator, Superformance or ammo capped of with a hunting type bullets over 180grn.

My rifle''s S/N is 0421XX. The barrel is a H&R 7790190 dated 12-60-1. This would make it 7.62 . Thanks to all that replied. Eddie

Would the 77 series USGI barrel drawing number denote a NM spec bore?
Were there other drawing numbers used on USGI barrels?

My late 1999 Loaded SAI M1A has a stainless steel barrel marked .308. It came with an armorers tag with the headspace listed. The data falls within the specs for both .308 and 7.62mm NATO and I have shot both types of many manufacturers successfully.
