Be sure to check out the hotels on CMP's website. I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn in Oxford. Got a great deal using the CMP corporate discount along with a free full breakfast and there's all kinds of restaurants within walking distance. Best of all it's a 5 minute drive to South Store from there.

Bald Rock state parking is half an hour south of Anniston and is the highest point in Alabama if I recall correctly. Nice rustic cabins, hiking, etc., in a beautiful park. Definitely worth the trip.

Bryan is correct the state park is a real nice place to visit and fall is a great time for visit. But it is Cheaha State Park. Also if you guys are bicycle riders, mountain or street there are world class bike trails here.

Top of the River is best seafood around!!!

Gadsden has Noccalula falls, which will have there Christmas lights display soon. I really enjoy riding the train with the little kids around that park. There are a few nice aquariums near there like Chattanooga or Atlanta. Huntsville has the NASA Space and Rocket Center, which has that Space Camp.

Lots of outdoor activities in Northern Al.

If you like birds/waterfowl, visit Wheeler Wildlife refuge in Decatur. They currently have whooping cranes wintering there.

If you like to bass fish go 1.5 hrs up the road to Guntersville Lake. If you can't drag the boat to Bama or you don't have one some of the best bass fishing guides in the country are at Lake G. There's some great crappie and striper fishing a bit closer at Weiss Lake as well.
