Default Saw a Ford Trimotor today!

Was driving on I-44 through Lebanon, MO this afternoon and saw a fairly large, high wing plane flying pretty slow. I asked my son what it was since he's an aviation buff but he couldn't identify it. It was making a turn to starboard to fly east and I told him it looked like a Ford Trimotor but it was still too far away to identify. It finally flew close enough to tell and sure enough, a Trimotor! I thought that was way cool! No pics because I was driving. That's the first time I've ever seen one flying.

My dad and I took a ride in one back in the 70's...wicker seats and the engine gauges were in the wing struts outside. A Solid airframe...not fast but easy to fly and forgiving .... solid aircraft.

Very cool. Would love to take a ride in one. Quick search shows less than 200 made and EAA has one still flying so odds are high that it was theirs.

Yeah, it was EAA's aircraft. I looked it up on their website and they had it at Lebanon where we drove through. They were giving flights to folks who paid for them. I just thought it was amazing that that's the kind of plane we saw. Very distinctive profile.

Pretty amazing. I think the tri-motor carried mail in the early days.

About a year ago I saw one fly over my house. Probably the same one because I doubt many of them are still air worthy. I looked it up and I think flights were like $70. If it comes back I’ll totally do it. A few years ago my wife and I took our first flight together (ever) in a B17. Awesome experience.

The EAA trimotor will be doing rides at Airventure, according to the website. Bell 47 helicopter rides will be available too.
I intended to camp at last year's Airventure to see the B-29s "Doc" and "Fifi" fly together but my wife was sick most of the summer, so we plan to be there this year.
The B-29s will be back, and the EAA website says that Tom Reilly will be flying in with his newly restored XP-82 Twin Mustang. There should also be a couple of P-47 Thunderbolts that are fresh from the restoration shops.
I'm one of those guys that runs outside whenever an airplane flies over. It really stinks, not being able to pass the flight physical any more.
