Default Best Commercial Match 30-06 for Garand

Hello all.

I was curious if people have a preference for commercial 30-06 match ammo for the Garand. I saw two options that I could figure. Gold Medal Match and the Hornady Vintage Match ELD 30-06. Both seem to meet specs for the Garand, but I've read that the Gold Medal Match is no longer recommended. Not sure, though.

Thanks for all your help.

I've never seen any ammo shoot as well as the Creedmoor ammo loaded with Lapua 167 gr. bullets. It was used in the sniper match at Perry and shot great out to 600 yards. They don't give it away but you didn't ask for cheap, just good.
Good luck!

Gentlemen, Keep in mind that statistically the largest source of error predominates. In other words, if you are shooting a service grade rifle, the rifle is probably the single greatest limitation to accuracy - not the ammo. You probably can't tell the difference between good ammo and really good ammo. Now if you use a match grade rifle, you likely will be able to see a difference.

I guess I should have qualified this. The goal of this is to put it in a purpose-built M1D rifle. Not anything service grade. I wholeheartedly agree that a standard service rifle itself will decrease the accuracy right off the bat, so no need to be crazy.

I'm also thinking about beginning reloading as well. The price, even in the best of times, for any of this is nearing $1.50/round. I think the CMP has the best price of of the Hornady product at $1.43/round if I'm remembering correctly. So this purpose-built rifle may push me there.

I was looking for this on both the Creedmoor page and on the CMP page. They don't seem to sell or stock it anymore. They have 308 167gr, but not 30-06. I know I've seen it before in the past.

Was just searching the E-store and can't find this listed anymore. Is CMP still selling this? I agree, great ammo and the Lapua brass is a plus...

I hadn't until you posted that. I'll have to debate that one, but the price is quite great for sure.

Not the very best, but PPU is good stuff. Cases re-load well and the ammo is very consistent.
