Guess I was lucky - I got to play war in the mid-'60's with a Chi-Com Kalashnikov (broken, of course).

Lucky, til suppertime, when this 6 y/o couldn't lift a fork

I was lucky...Dad got me a "Johnny Eagle Lieutenant" M14 capgun that actually had a removeable magazine and shot plastic bullets! Toys were way cooler back then.
