This! Pump iron and more iron. Get on that tread mill or walk outside.
Get in shape---marksmanship can be taught or comes back to you with practice. Being in shape takes a lot of time.

Any restriction on trigger pull, bedding, shims, match prep work done on them?

Trigger will need to make 4.5 lbs. Can have the full NM treatment for the rest. That is why you would be in unlimited vs as-issued for the JCGarand Match.

Yes they do shoot well. The Farr trophy was won with a Garand in recent memory. There are a couple guys that finish in the P100 and NTI cut pretty frequently with them. Locally I know a guy who has a Master classification and over 20 leg points with one. They have a list of downsides compared to an AR but they are just as capable of shooting 500 if the shooter is up to the task.

My CMP service grade came with new wood and a mirror bore so I gave it the basic treatment...NM sights, basic bedding job, turner sling. I used it at several reduced course matches last year and it shot great. But I get a terrible tooth ache in my right rear molar after an 80 shot match.
