Default Type 1 National Match Garand ?

When did the use of wood wedges start with original type 1 stocks?
Should there be finish under the NM / Star stamp between the gas rings on barrel or should it be bare?
Thanks,

Thanks,
Ken,

The wooden wedges appear on most late 1958 (but not all) and 1959 NM rifles. NM papers designate when the rifle was sold and not built.

Most engraved or stamped NM marks on barrels will be bright. Sometimes age makes them look like a finish over them. Some will have finish over top and logically one would assume these barrels were already gauged as NM quality before final Parkerizing.
