Default Florida

Greetings from Florida. I've been catching up on the gun hobby over the last 4 years, mostly with pistols but also with a 10/22 and a Mini 30.

I recently acquired a mid 1950s M1 and look forward to shooting it. Someone told me not to use modern hunting ammo in it, though. How true is this?

Hello John, what part of Florida?

Modern loads can be too powerful and cause the op rod to bend. Most suggest using 150 grain ammo or getting an adjustable gas plug that will prevent such a problem.

Enjoy your rifle.

Welcome to the forum. M1 Garands are fun to shoot, but they can be habit forming. I'm from Walton County, aka the frozen north for the next couple of nights anyway!

Welcome to the Forums JohnR, The only Commercial Ammo you should shoot is ammo marked for the M-1 Garand ,other wise use M-2 ball ammo,Its inexpensive compared to commercial ,and is made for shooting in the Garand. You can shoot that till your Hearts content ,On the ammo page it goes for $98.00 in a ammo can for 200 or more rounds ,also you can buy the Black tipped 30.06 armor piercing ammo for $110.00 for 200 plus rounds ,I like the AP, seems to be more accurate. Im a Floridian also!!

Thanks, all. I see the manual states clearly if I use commercial 30-06 it's fine as long as it's 180Gr or less.

I'm in Jax, by the way.

Welcome to the forums from Tampa Bay! As others have noted, use .30 '06 Springfield 150gr and you should be fine. BTW, HXP just had a price increase to $118/200 rounds. Still a reasonable price, though and your purchases help fund the CMP's activities.

Welcome aboard JohnR. Always nice to have another person from North Florida with us. ou will enjoy you Garand very much. Suggest you put in a nice big ammo order from CMP and hang onto the brass and maybe get into reloading down the road.
