Default 11/3 NS Report

Arrived at 8:45am for my first ever visit to a CMP store. There were already 5-6 other customers in the store when I arrived and most were looking through the field grades. A couple had already selected at least one to inspect at the desk.

They had both sides of a rack with field grades. Most were SAs but I did end up finding 3 HRAs. Most of the SAs were in the 2 and 3 million serial number range although I did see one 5-digit and three 6-digit. I only looked at the field grade M1s but there were also racks of Garand and 1903A3 Drill rifles, field grade Garand snipers and a full rack of Winchester specials. They also still have Spam Cans.

Since it was my first visit to the store, it was a bit overwhelming trying to look over each rifle, trying to remember to examine it thoroughly. I can only imagine what it was like even a few years ago.

I had gone through the rack at least twice without finding something I liked enough to buy. I thought for a moment that I wouldn't be taking one home but decided to check one more time and found a couple of HRAs that they just re-racked after others had finished inspecting them. The one I selected is an HRA with a 4.77 serial number, HRA bolt , HRA 6-54 barrel. The rest of the parts and stock appear to be SA parts. The receiver leg is etched with SA and what appears to be 4-64 (it is a bit sloppy) which makes me think it could be a SA rebuild?

I ended up taking home a rifle, 2 spam cans, 3 slings and a very nice postwar bayonet. The guys behind the counter were very helpful.

Now it sounds like you need to go back and get an SA with an HRA stock...at least that's how it started for me.

Thanks for the report.

The SA rebuild marks I've seen have always been really sloppy, like the guy doing it was hyped up on 2 pots of coffee and had some really bad caffeine shakes.

Thanks for the report.

I have to admit that exact thought rattled around inside my head for more than a moment.

Insanity took over and I only took the one home.

Do you happen to remember a ball park for the five digit? Wonder if it's still there?

Sorry, I don't. I saw so many numbers that they all started to blend together.

There was still a 5 digit 60k rifle there yesterday afternoon. Hope that helps. Don't remember the particulars.

Had a great visit there Friday (11/4) morning. Good selection of rack and field grade SA's. Plenty of C's and D's too. Enjoyable visit with the folks behind the counters. Picked up a couple soft cases and targets.

They had Rack Grades too? That's the first I've heard.
