Default 5.5M Range HRA

All,
I'm looking for a level of expertise much greater than my own regarding a question I had on my M1. My HRA serial places it in that unique 5.5 to 5.6 range for the purpose of determining the correct DOD Acceptance Stamp (558XXXX). The gun is all original except for the CMP Stock which I am thinking of replacing with HRA to make correct. Is there a definitive in determining whether I should be looking at a 3/8ths or 1/2in? I've read 5.5M and above are predominantly the 1/2 but 3/8ths could exist up to and slightly beyond 5.6M.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Welcome to the forum!!!! I have a 5.57 HRA correct grade with a 3/8 DOD. This link in the Garand section might help http://forums.thecmp.org/showthread.php?t=26120 Also check the completed auctions in the sales section, they have quite a few HRA's in the 5.5 range that are collector grade. Here is one near your S/N from a closed CMP auction http://cmpauction.thecmp.org/detail....nd-HRA-5584353

If you are doing a restoration, the 3/8" DAS will always be suitable for use on any 5.5 million. Although 1/2" stamps s began to be encountered in the 5.56 million range (or perhaps a bit earlier), the so called Large-Box stamps were never common in 5.5 millions.

I have a 5.5M range HRA with a 3/8" DAS, large back porch, and a serif P proof mark. From what I understand, this was uncommon but not unheard of.
