Default M1 Garand captured in Afghanistan

Not my pic, no information on it. Not sure who or when but I thought it was interesting.

Could also been Iraq, but definitely one of the two places. Bet that Trooper was glad to get that Garand off the streets.

Documented, returned to CMP and then to auction, what would be your guess for how much it would bring?

Field Grade for sure. Only would bring $3500.00 at auction.

Bet it one of the IHCs.

Hope there is a way it can come home.

Yes, that is from Iraq.

On my last deployment there as an advisor to the Iraqis, during a trip to one of their regional training centers, I passed an office where one was hanging on a wall...could easily see it was in bad shape (finish worn/rusted, front site missing, stock gouged and wrapped in wire/thread around the pistol grip).
Apparently it was some general's office and we couldn't go in to see. Never got another chance to view it. Talked with my direct counterparts and they relayed how that particular one was captured from the Iranians, and that they had captured several of them from the Iranians, along with countless other types of weapons during the Iran-Iraq war.

On a couple occasions, they talked about the that war and how the Iranians would send teens and children at them in waves, WWI style, usually with just hand-tools, to at least try and get the Iraqis to run out of ammo before attacking with militia and/or regulars. Along with the other stories where both sides committed similar atrocities, you could tell it was painful for them to recount.

Regards,
Rob
