Default Answer from NAMMO

Sitting here in Manila, waiting for the bayo's to go on sale, (yeah right). Checked email and got an answer on the AYR ammo question. Basically Raufass made primers until the 53/54 time frame which were corrosive. After that they purchased their primers from Dynamit Nobel RWS (Germany), and they were non corrosive. Text from NAMMO email below.

Hi Dave,

You have waited weeks on answer from Norway, but it takes time to do research on very old ammunition.

We have found documentation about manufacturing of primers at Raufoss, and Raufoss closed the door on primer production in 1953/54 and on that time they had corrosive primers. After that we assume Raufoss bought all primers from Dynamit Nobel (RWS), Germany, and the primers were non-corrosive.

Good Luck!

Best regards

Thanks for going through the effort to obtain that response!

That thankfully backs up the non-scientific testing performed by many other forum members.

I had a feeling that was the case but it's always good to have it confirmed! Thank you very much for your effort!

Dave,

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to get the real story! It's great when we can go straight to the source to get the correct info, and not rely on hearsay or conjecture.

That having been said, I wonder how long it took Raufoss to go through their stock of corrosive primers once they ceased production of these? If production ceased in 1953, I'd guess by 1955 they were using non-corrosive primers. If the cessation took place in 1954, it might be dicey to assume 1955 AYR is non-corrosive until demonstrated through field trials.

But that's conjecture

I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank the people who canceled their original orders of AP when they feared that they were corrosive primers...thereby allowing a whole bunch of other people to order AP later.

Good work Dave. Thanks. I was stationed at Warner Robins AFB in 1963-64. What a fun time that was.
