I was told this stock once had a cavalry sling mount on it. Got the rifle at the North Store some time ago and toyed around with the idea of matching the grain up and fitting a piece of thin walnut in the missing wood cutout but would much rather have the original sling mount that is supposed to go there. Does anyone know if it was in fact a sling mount that is supposed to be there, and if a sling mount could ever be found that fits it. Any info would be appreciated greatly.

See Abeal's North Store Report 1/23/2010 in the North Store Forum, there's a picture of one towards the bottom of the pictures posted.

A few of the rifles received back from the Greeks had swivels mounted on the rear left of the stock, and the lower band modified by the addition of a swivel.
As I understand it, the armorers are replacing the lower bands, and removing the swivels from the stocks, although some may be missed. Because of the cutout, these rifles are sold as field grade. To me, the swivels are an integral part of the history of the rifle, simlar to the Bavarian/Austrian markings on some carbines. "Life is Good!" |

There were quite a few rifles with sling swivels on the side and some even had leather slings on them at the GCA conference. Was told they were "Greek Cavalry" rifles, but I've got nothing beyond hearsay on that.

I will never, ever be able to handle this rifle again without thinking of "electric Garand". Thanks for the "feedback".

Thanks, I just sent off an email. I'll keep my fingers crossed that they can help me. I would love to add the cavalry service history back to the rifle.

I received a virtually unshot M1903A3 from the CMP with the cavalry swivels . I left them. It adds a bit of unual flavor.
Which brings up the question - if the CMP sent out the altered 1903's , why would they "fix" the M1's? |

Last year I received a CMP 1903A3 with the cavalry sling swivel attached on the left side of the stock.
Does anyone know what the sling looked like or how it was attached? |
