Default Ar-15 build concerns

About a month ago I just finished building a Garand from a CMP stripped receiver & now I'm itching to build something else. I've looked into the possibilities of building a M1 carbine, 1903, 1903A3, AK-47, AK-74, & a AR-15. I did a bit of research in each of those guns to see how difficult it would be to build them and how much it would cost. I ended up deciding on trying to build a AR-15 since they don't seem too expensive to build like the others. I'm thinking about building the AR in the M-16A1 style going for the Vietnam look. I found most of the parts I would need to build one, but I have a few concerns about it though. One is that I'm thinking about putting on a 20" Del-ton barrel which I'm assuming its a A2 style barrel and I was wondering if it would have a problem fitting onto a A1 style upper receiver? And the other concern I have is will the A1 triangular handguards have a problem fitting onto the barrel I plan to put on? I googled my questions and I've gotten different opinions saying it will be fine and some that says you have to remove some metal off the barrel for the handguards to fit. Whats your guy's $.02 on this?

Contact the barrel manufacturer.

Ask the distributor from whom you will buy the barrel.

Ask Brownells.

Unless you can find someone who has done exactly what you want to do, a forum will be of little help. Accept no advice from someone who has not done it. (I have not.)

Why this particular barrel?

I picked this particular barrel because it was the only one I could find available in 20in. I've tried DPMS, Fulton armory, Brownells, and other websites that would carry the 20in barrel but majority of them were sold out unfortunately. Del-ton was the only one that had a 20in in stock.

The barrel will work as well as the handguards.

Try SARCO Inc for a GI skinny A1 barrel. Ohio Ordnance may have some too.

The barrel should fit the receiver. That area's basic design has not changed between the various versions.

What may not work is whether you can fit the A1 hand guard to the barrel and barrel nut. I am afraid I cannot answer that.

You might go to one of the AR forums such as AR15.com. More concentrated, type specific knowledge over there.

Any barrel should fit on any upper receiver. The triangle handguards will fit unless the barrel is a heavy/bull barrel. I built a 605 clone last year and used a DPMS dissy barrel that was .98" under the hand guards and the A1 guards wouldn't fit. I removed the FSB and turned the barrel down to .70" under the guards and the A1 guards fit perfect. I think any barrel under .80" should work. DPMS has an A1 type light weight barrel that uses an A1 FSB, but is .75" under the FSB, not .625" like it should be. Original A1 barrels are hard to find but do show up on the arfcom site above. Some of the new barrels don't come with the FSB. You'll either have to install it yourself or send it off to be done. Good luck with your build.

Thanks for the info. I looked into Sarco for the barrel, they didn't have the pencil barrel. I looked into Ohio ordinance, they did not have the pencil barrel as well but they did have a complete A2 barrel, would the A2 barrel accept A1 parts?

Thanks for the links and info. Also when you say, ".98 under the hand guards.." you are talking about the diameter right?

I put triangular handguards on my DPMS bull barreled AR upper that I built this past January. I did have to file down the guards near the front sight to make them fit, but from the sounds of it, you seem like someone who can make things work. Good luck with the project, and post pics when done!
