DIY rifle stand M1 Garand and others

The concept - I wanted an inexpensive (as in CHEAP) table/mantle display stand for a long gun-

    The initial idea -

The unattainable dream if I owned any real woodworking tools or had any skill with wood ( I don't)-

MY DIY result using a newly purchased $8 Home Depot 1x8 board, my ancient Skilsaw, a strip of indoor/outdoor carpet I found in the basement and some 20yr old walnut varnish stain that was on a shelf downstairs. Yes I know it looks like it was hacked by a blind woodsman and a rabid beaver - LOL

But for eight bucks, a few hours and some burnt fingers (doggone hot melt glue) I have 'something' that vaguely resembles a gun stand.

I like it. It looks like my projects. As long as you are happy that's great. Serves the purpose and looks good.

Definitely like it, has the reclaimed wood look too --- for an 1800's look maybe a couple strips of rabbit pelt instead of the carpet + your favorite BP squirrel gun...

Beautiful project Sir & my Compliments!!

Thanks - it's a Special Rack HRA from '54 - I'll be stripping it down soon and giving the wood the same tung oil treatment I used on the '44 Springfield SR I gifted to my son for Christmas 2019.

I don't want to boast ner nuthin', but since I live alone in this bungalow I enjoy a CUSTOM stock refinishing drying center.

Is that Southern Yellow Pine behind the Springfield drying?

Well, now that I've blindly slapped together one display stand and made the mistakes, I do believe I will built a second one and see if I can make it a little 'prettier' but still functional. I'll post pics and maybe a dimensional build list if it comes out nice.

Again these ARE for the absolute non-woodworkers among us, like me.

I think that the color/stain selection for 83% of home DIY projects is based what you find in the garage that is left over from prior projects.

As promised, here is a picture and dimension/instructions for my rifle display stand - I will again be using thin strips of indoor-outdoor carpet hot-melt glued to the upright cutouts to protect the rifle stock.

UPDATE - I've begun assembly and have changed to 2-1/2" screws as the 3-1/2" were total overkill. I do however pre-drill the bases each upright for the three screws to hopefully prevent splitting the 1" boards. I will varnish stain them after assembly.

And here is the new finished product with my Garand - I made 4 of them for sale at a local gun show next month. I'm thinking $15 each.

But you don't leave the rifle out in plain sight on the stand do you? Does the stand fit, with the rifle on it, in your secure gun safe?

I know people that hung their valuable rifles in beautiful racks on the wall or in fancy glassed gun cases. At least for awhile they did, until they came home one day from the store and they were all gone. Another friend thought his gun safe didn't need to be secured to the floor or wall because it was just too heavy to move and was upstairs. He came home after an extended vacation to find a hole in the wall behind where his stairs started at the back of his house and the safe and 15 valuable firearms were missing. They found the safe cut open a month later, empty of course.

You did a great job on the stand, It would look like a hack job if I tried it for certain but, just use it wisely. It's definitely a worse than it was before world these days. Diligence trumps loss every time.

I use the stand to temporarily hold the rifle on my cleaning table. I NEVER display my firearms in my home.
