Help with VN era Stevens 58 shotgun
Bought this Stevens 58 bolt action 12 ga this morning and noticed an import stamp and what I found out are Thai markings. Internet says they were used around US bases by the locals for hunting, etc. It even has what appears to be a GI nylon carbine sling. Anybody have any other info? thanks

Guys might not know it but a small number (450) of Win97's came into the USA. Harvey got his hands on them out of Canada around 2001 or so. Sold at Reno Big Show and Knob Creek. Lots of guys who bought them had no idea they were RVN returnees. To say the least very uncommon. My team in RVN had one, fun shooters.

The rear sight that is mounted on that shotgun is originally from a Finnish M39 Mosin Nagant Rifle.

Rather odd set up for sights. The front sight is not adjustable and the rear sight is only adjustable for elevation. Who would need to lob a 12 gauge slug 2000 yards?

Of course, this being a smoothbore, sights for any shot past 50 yards would be completely useless.

It looks to be something that a gunsmith put together from a variety of parts from different sources.

Back in the 1950's and 60's, bolt action shotguns were plentiful and quite cheap. They were made by Marlin, Mossberg, and Stevens under their own name and for a wide variety of companies under a variety of "trade" names.

My first shotgun was a "J.C. Higgins" 20 gauge bolt action model with a tubular magazine under the barrel, It was made by Stevens.

Just thought military might have done the sights and swivels, probably a local gunsmith here, definetly interesting that it was used over there in Thailand
