That M8 does appear to be NOS. I can’t imagine many were still around in the Vietnam era to be packaged with these bayonets. Cool score if you get one!!

A few years ago when the North Store had the M7 bayonet NOS repacks available for purchase I would normally pick up one or two sets during each visit. At the time we still had the most knowledgeable person on US bayonets with us, Mr Gary Cunningham.
I had sent Mr Cunningham a few examples of some scabbards and bayonets I had received. Mr Cunningham suggested that I should open the box the repacks were in to inspect the scabbards for any rust. The scabbards were not sealed but wrapped in rust resistant wrapping. Mr Cunningham suggested to keep the bayonets sealed as the bayonets had never been issued but the manufacturer could be had by the NSN number stamped on the package. I ended up getting 6 or 7 M8 scabbards packed with the M7 bayonets.
With the M7 bayonets and scabbards being repacks they were not originally packed with a scabbard. This was done after the Vietnam war so Mr Cunningham did not see any harm and encouraged me to open the packages to inspect the scabbards. I’m very glad I did. I had purchased his book (autographed and numbered) which has the information needed to see what bayonet is packed without opening the bayonet. It’s odd that they would pack an M8 scabbard with these M7 bayonets. If the M8 scabbards have not been modified they will not fit the newer USGI web belt.
