Korean KA 73 corrosion

All,

While repacking some KA 73 M2 ball I discovered 3 rounds out of 200 that had corrosion on the cases. I disassembled them to find the cases had cracked and the result is shown below. What I am wondering is did the corrosion cause the crack or did the crack cause the corrosion?

I am undecided what to do with this batch, I can shoot the remainder in my bolt guns and clean properly for the corrosive primers -or- give them to a friend that reloads and let him pull them apart for any salvageable components. I did notice the bullets are magnetic so that may not be something he is interested in.

Have not ever seen such a problem w/ any of the Korean KA or PS M-2 ammo. Have seen cases w/ a bluish black stain. Never a problem w/ fuction, firing, etc. Possibly it is the result of storage issues? Sincerely bruce.

Bruce,

The ammo was in its original Korean 50 cal ammo can, in enblocs and bandoleers.

May want to pull a few samples of the clean rounds and see what they look like inside.

Looks like the cracks were caused by the corrosion. Follow MarkV's suggestion and pull a few clean ones.

Sounds like a good idea, I'll pull apart a random sample.

Corrosion and cracking looks like damage caused by powder degradation. A nitric acid fume can be released as this occurs. The powder will be clumped and possibly moist. It will not pour freely from the case.

Look for early signs of this in samples thst you pull. Not a good thing to find in old ammo!

Update

So I grabbed 10 rounds at random to give about a 5% sample of this lot. I found no additional signs of corrosion or clumping of the powder. No off smells were detected.

Now what to do with it...

Well it looks like it's time to shoot that batch up and then use the cases for reloading

Yep,shoot them in a bolt gun.
