M1a Stock Surprise!
I purchased a Polytech "M1a" last month. Someone had done some different modifications. They had also painted the stock. I was going to sand and repaint to a better camo pattern, when I noticed the stock had some cartouche marks.
Attached are some pictures. Wanted to get some information on what kind of stock I have. Also, there is something above the "545" not sure if it is damage or purposefully placed. I have a pointer on the spot in the picture. Last but not least... I was going to use B. Linseed oil to recondition the stock, or open to other ideas. https://imgur.com/8nOYWXJ https://imgur.com/aQMMAsj https://imgur.com/KQ7vfOF Thanks in advance for the help/advice. Rambler1 |
Looks like USGI wood. Possibly walnut or reddish birch. Well worth refinishing. Get the old paint off. May possibly find a DOD stamp on the left side of the stock just below the vicinity of the rear sight Don't know what the little peck looking holes might be. You can fill them with sanding dust mixed with a little bit of epoxy ... or plain old carpenters glue. If you want a camouflaged you can find a good used stock. Sincerely. bruce.

Will have to wait till tomorrow to look at the pictures. For some reason I cannot see Imgur on my Mac.
The Polytec M-1A's are very good. Some folks have used the receivers to build some really nice rifles. Of course hindsight is always 20:20, but do so wish I'd bought one back in the day. Enjoy your rifle! Sincerely. bruce. |

Seems pretty unique. I think I am going to replace with a period correct to match the stock. Rambler1 |
