.278" is the original spec size. There're 3-4 longer sizes (.001" at a time) out there. Main job of the link is to pull barrel down out of slide locking lugs. Dimensional slop sometimes require a longer link. The link is not supposed to push bbl up into lockup; that's the job of the lower lug feet on either side of the link. The Kuhnhausen books explain it very nicely. Usually the .278 works just fine.
