The web belt came first, and most only had one snap. The 'pocket' was offset so the fabric didn't cover the buckle.

Re-enactors (and others) often want to slip the pocket over the carbine's stock but are afraid the snap will back up the wood work. Moving the snap to the center supposedly better insures the snap is over the stock cut for the sling and oiler.

Post 19 in this thread has a photo of the narrower pockets for .45 ACP magazines.
