Prior to the time M14 rifles were being sent to Capt. Crunch, GI M14 stocks and butt plates were in short supply. Springfield Inc. sold some of their M1A rifles with these stocks and used Garand butt plates. Thousands of M14 rifles were destroyed, but the stocks were sold off to companies like Springfield and Fred's M14 Stocks because they were considered hazardous material and the government wouldn't burn them. That took care of the shortage.
