Keep in mind that Hodgdon states on its own website that its priority is its regular distribution channels. They don't want to upset their wholesalers or their retailers by competing with them by undercutting the margins they allow in their wholesale price schedule, so they charge the full list price on their own site. Many factory stores do that. You can usually find wholesalers and retailers who will accept a lower margin than their price discount allows for that very reason.

Varget is a good powder. It does a fair job of compensating for temperature in .308 Win/7.62 NATO loads but does less well to no better than any other stick powder in many other chamberings, like 223/5.56 NATO (at least, IME). This is a basic limitation with all temperature compensation powder chemistry schemes: they have to be designed to adjust for a particular pressure and temperature, and time profile, which means they will work best with cartridges and bullet weights that come close to having that profile. In all others, not so much.
