Gents we are not cleaning this one up again. Those of you who have nothing to add to the actual topic of this thread need to stay out.

They should make the old M1 spec with the 173gr boat tail bullet. That was a far superior cartridge, but the Army didn't like it because it had too long a range.

Technically it was the National Guard. It was outshooting the surface danger zones.

But yes an M1 ball clone would be awesome. I shot 10 rounds of 5 different years of 30's M1 ball. 2 MOA.

Not too shabby

Someone didn't proof-read the velocity & energy data before publishing it in the manual, I'm guessing, because it appears to give two different muzzle velocity stats for the same load:

It states: "52 External ballistics ...," then below "c. Velocity" it states: "(3) Muzzle 2805 feet per second."

Bu then below that, right under the "Table of Fire," it says: "Based on a muzzle velocity of 2700 feet per second."

Huh? That's 105fps slower. Why? Did I miss something?

I covered it but apparently the mods decided some of the posts needed removing...

I'm just curious as to the reason, other than maybe a typo or proofing error, for the inconsistency in the stated muzzle velocities for what is apparently the same load?

The 2700fps number came from the M1919A4 firing tables printed before M2 ball was increased from the "old" 2700 to the "new" 2805fps MV. This was to better match the ballistics of the 165gr AP round.

Okay, thanks for the clarification.

I have a few hundred rounds of that stuff (FA) in the original brass clips. But it's corrosive and I don't want to strip the rifle completely down to clean it right away after use.
