Default NS Pop-in 7/31/21

Picked up my score cards today, so I stuck my head in the store around 10:00 AM for a quick look. Not crowded, maybe 8 folks including me. No bolt rifles.

Notable to me was a rack of about 9 CMP specials. I think 8 SA and 1 HRA. Interestingly, CMP used single slot gas screws in most of the builds. I was looking for CMP special rack grade, but the shelf was empty.

There were 6 FG rifles out at this time, all ME/TE of 3/4, only one did i consider picking up, but i left it behind.

Other rifles seemed same as prior reports, I didn't inspect any:

1 rack gap IHCs

1 rack (about 8) FG IHCs

1 rack 6 mil SAs

1 rack drill garands

1 rack across the back by the sweatshirts of M1Cs and M1Ds

The did have examples of the Presentation Grade drills (one Garand and one 03A3) -- very nice but not $750 nice.

I think Commercial Row had open:

House of Payne
Creedmoor Sports
Champions Choice
Rock River Arms
with
Sherluck and US Armament getting ready to open for the day.

RRA has a back room full of seconds and used items mostly barrels and uppers.

Sorry no. There were a couple of pallets of Creedmoor behind the armorers that I think was mostly, if not all, 30-06.

House of Payne had a wide selection of ammo and their sign said no limits. Mostly pistol calibers but I saw match .308 and some .223. Didn't note prices.

What is the difference between CMP Special and CMP Rack Special? I picked up a rack special 2 weeks ago and it's fantastic!

Picked up a Service Grade 03A3.

House of Payne ammo is great, real nice guys too!

CMP Special should have a better condition receiver prior to refinishing, better condition overall parts and everything reparked, effectively an as new rifle. It is also $400 more than the rack version.

Go to the CMP rifle sales page for MI Garands:

https://thecmp.org/sales-and-service/m1-garand/

and scroll down to the title "SPECIAL GRADE M1 GARAND" just past halfway down the page. The first description in that section is:

"CMP Special (.30-06) M1 Garand. This is a completely refurbished rifle consisting of an original M1 Garand Springfield or HRA receiver, new production Criterion barrel, new production American Walnut stock and handguards, and new web sling. Receiver and most other parts are refinished USGI, but some parts may be new manufacture.
Receiver may have pitting."

The third description is:

"CMP Special Rack Grade (.30-06) M1 Garand. This is a partially refurbished rifle with a refinished M1 receiver, new production criterion barrel, new production American Walnut stock and handguards, and new web sling. Receiver is the only part of the rifle that has been refinished. Remainder of the other parts have NOT been refinished.
Receiver will have heavy pitting above the wood line."

There are your differences.

The second description is identical to the third except it specifies the rack grade receiver is from WRA. The rest of the descriptions in that section are for other variations the CMP has offered in the past.

That's what I thought, but then I got a special rack and all the parts look brand new or refinished and I see no pitting on anything except one spot on the trigger assembly. So I'm thinking I made a great choice!

That is a great choice. You really can't beat a Rack Special if you plan to shoot CMP matches. A little careful fitting and a trigger job will give you a rifle capable of shooting 'clean' targets.

The last time I popped in the store (a week or so) , there was a number of those IHC FG that had LMR barrels.
