Where can I get the Vietnam era mags that the CMP is sending with the 1911s? They are the only type that will feed consistently. I ordered 2 Wilson Combat mags last summer that don’t do the job.

I know……another magazine question!

Gun show or eBay. There is a guy on the latter who has been selling groups of 10 of the USGI contract mags lately; starting bid $99. Search for"1911 USGI magazine" or a variation, and you should be able to see offerings.

I obtained a few (WW2 era to Desert Storm era) over the last few months from a couple of gun shows and eBay.

Good luck.

I just today received 2 surplus mags I ordered on ebay. Labelled: 19200-ASSY 5508694 MFR 30745. They fit great, slide in easy and seem to engage properly, and drop free when I hit the release. Will test at the range later this week.

The mec-gar mag that came with my FG looks good, but was extremely tight, and would not engage completely with the mag catch, popped out 1/2 inch after most shots.

The more modern USGI magazines have a CAGE Code (manufacturer) on the bottom.

I found this searching the internet. So it may be in error.
USGI Surplus:

1) CAGE Code - 1M291 is Check-Mate Industries. CAGE Code Established: 1/11/1975 produced in 1974 - 1992

2) CAGE Code - 30745 is Mason-Rust Co. CAGE Code Established: 11/4/1974-1980 Stay away from Mason Rust contact mags. Reportedly, most that are in circulation are bogus. Not sure how true the claims of bogus Chinese made copies is.

3) CAGE Code - 8R611 is Kasco Metal Products. CAGE Code Established: 4/8/1979

Not Surplus. Appear to be modern made pseudo replicas.
4) CAGE Code - 8R320 is STEEN ARMAMENT RESEARCH CO INC (SARCO) EASTON, PA, UNITED STATES
The CAGE Code is valid, but couldn't find reference of Government contracts.

That is the best information I have. Take it with a grain of salt.

I have some of the cage code 30745 that I bought many years ago and I have some of the 1m291 bought from the CMP back when they were selling them and I was using these mags in commercial colts and they work fine. My GI pistol from the first round fed and functioned better with then 30745 mags than it did with some of the 1m291 mags. I shoot 230 grain lead round nose light loads in the GI pistol and they feed great from any of the mags. I also tried some 185 gr swc lead bullets and they feed fine from some commercial check mate and colt mags, feeding the swc bullets has all to do with the shape of the feed lips. I decided to just shoot the round nose lead in the old gun since that’s the bullet it was designed for and it feeds 100% reliably.

How do you tell the Viet Nam era magazines from the later ones the CMP were selling?

I was shipped a 1M291 Checkmate mag with my round 1 pistol and purchased 10 of the same when CMP was selling them 10 for $80 a few years back. They operate well in my CMP A1 and my 1911Colt that was a match gun I picked up about 35 years ago from the widow of a retired Army Command Sgt Maj.
