I suggest you look at the scores from recent MM matches in the CMP "Competition Tracker". You will get a feel for the scores and relative participation in the different classes. I am fairly certain that you will find the standard MM class best suited to your interests. Most M4s will easily hold the SR ten ring even with mil ammo. Good Shooting. ...

Steve - OH,
Fremont Izaak Walton right off 53 and the turn pike runs about 5 GSM matches per year and is a nice relaxed place to get started in these matches. You will want a spotting scope for those matches. Often high power shooters are happy to loan gear to new shooters on different relays, or even bring extra to loan out to help new shooters get started. I showed up to my first match with an M1, web sling, 2 enbloc clips, ear plugs, and 50 rounds of ammo. Generous shooters loaned me a mat and spotting scope and everything went smooth.

Don't let worrying about what might happen stop you from showing up. Get out there and start competing! It`s a ton of fun and you will wish you started a long time ago.

The first match there is 4/17. Great group. Relaxed matches. They have a Google sites webpage with info and a calendar.

To the OP:

Lots of excellent advice already given.

I'll add: Buy the 2 round enbloc clip! It's well worth the money.

A USGI sleeping pad makes a GREAT economical mat-about $10 at local gun shows.

In lieu of a shooting jacket-wear 1 or 2 sweatshirts under a normal jacket.

Shooters are allowed to coach each other in these matches! Ask to be squadded with an experienced shooter.

Good for you for joining in!

Looking forward to the match this weekend. Looks like a pretty small crowd. Will still be fun.

As luck would have it. I blew my shoulder out a couple weeks back. Bad enough I can barely lift my arm. Have a great time gentleman.
