I'd be more inclined to choose a service grade right about now.
Interesting observation. Don't know if CMP has almost exhausted 'Best condition' batch.

As my RGN is getting close, is there any new opinions on which grade would be best to choose? All three grades look pretty nice. Service grade might have a slightly higher chance of Gov't contract replacement slide, while rack might have little more wear?

Oddly enough, I hope only Field and Rack are available. Would make my decision easier. But I'll most likely choose Field either way.

All I know is that me (Round One) & my kid (Round Two) got SGs...both reparked weapons (COLT & REMINGTON RAND) in excellent condition...

SO...

If ROUND THREE is open to all-comers...

Gonna get FGs or RGs (no IFS, ANDS, or BUTS about it)!!!

With the experience of two CMP pistols in our household, One Service and one Field Grade, it seems to be all about the overall finish. Both are nice pistols. Both have a mixture of parts from all eras. Both have clear markings. No rebuild stamps on either one.

The Service Grade has a nicer all around finish than the Field Grade.

Here's hoping there is a third round. My wife wants one after seeing and shooting my field grade. She'll pick a field grade too.

I have a Springfield Armory GI Model that I shoot regularly, so I'm not interested in a "new" looking CMP pistol. Sounds like Field is the way to go.

Iím hoping to get a field grade or rack grade with an original finish thatís not too brown from age. Iím not a fan of the refinished service grades.

I was bound determined to pick a field grade given the chance.
When I got the call - all 3 grades were availableÖ I flinched and
went for the Service grade haha. Iím totally happy with my Service Grade
but deep down regret not going for the Field Grade. I prefer the worn
finish as opposed to the fresh park. Iíve seen some nice Field Grades
posted here. I havenít seen or heard of any ďrattle traps ď that many of the
naysayers were predicting we were going to get.
I think the CMP folks have done a great job!
Thank you CMP

If it makes you feel any better, choosing a Field Grade is no guarantee that you won't get a fresh parked finish. My FG was rebuilt (including park job) in '78 at Anniston and apparently put in storage until released to CMP. It looks just like, well, a freshly parked Service Grade.
