Default National Match barrels mfg

I bought a WW2 ( Feb 1943 ) Field Grade SA about 10 yrs ago at the South store. I never noticed but the 1954 barrel is stamped NM below the front sight. Does anyone know what % of the 1954 barrel production was designated National Match?

thanks for any help!

According to information that I've read in this forum and other places a 1954 NM barrel could be from a stash of 1954 SA barrels that was found in, if I remember correctly Schenectady, New York circa 1958 or 1959. After being found they were air gauge tested and a good number of them were found to be within NM specs and used for such. I have no idea how many 54 SA barrels were found or tested and found to be within NM specs. Perhaps other members that are more familiar with NM rifles than I am would chime in with more or better info.

Thanks Ronwall !

So 1) My Garand could be a National Match Rifle ( not likely )

2) The NM barrels you mentioned were used on regular rebuilds ( probably )

Again if I remember correctly they were still building NM rifles but there was a shortage of barrels that was within NM specs so the stash of 54 barrels was a god send. A year or so ago I bought a IHC at south store and it had a 3/63 NM barrel on it and no other sign of being a NM rifle. I asked the Armorer at the counter about it and he said it came from the Army with that barrel and for whatever reason the Army had installed it.

To Ronwalls point:
There was also talk?/confirmation? that the some of the rifles and/or spare barrels sent to the Greeks were NM.
The Greeks didn't know or care about that and so on some greek returns, you'll see NM barrels on otherwise "regular" rifles.........

Something like that? IIRC?

I did some more research and figured someone would be able to verify all the symbols on the barrel shank?

a) 4 point star- 1960 date code symbol for National Match?

b) "T" rifle was "targeted" after assembly

c) "P" rifle was "proof" fired for assembly

d) S A F6535448 Springfield Armory drawing number

e) 9 -54 Barrel mfg Sept 1954

f) A 2138 Steel Batch or Heat Lot Number

It appears the OP Rod is also NM stamped ( a NM part used in regular rebuild also ).

Looking at the black finish on the receiver metal and the markings on the buttstock and pistol grip this rifle is a "Greek return" to the CMP.
