I read somewhere that the Navy resorted to machining a slot into the chamber to give the insert additional stability. I assume if it comes out, a 30-06 round would swell into the groove and could cause extraction problems. Just speculation.

I just read the Fall 2011 and Fall 2012 GCA Journal articles. AMF was the first to convert using the sleeve. Sleeve ejection occurred and Crane modified the process by cutting grooves in the chamber to better hold the sleeve insert. So AMF will have sleeve inserts with or without the groove cuts. H&G started conversions only using the Crane design with grooves cuts in the chamber.

I have a Mod 0 that came to me minus the sleeve, I’m not sure if it was removed intentionally or unintentionally, I got this about 15 years ago and put a sleeve back in it at the time. It’s still there
