Default Strip a stock or not?

I just got nice carbine that has a nice walnut stock but appears to have been varnished, at least it is a hard glossy finish. There is barely a ghost of a cartouche showing that any more sanding would probably erase.
I'd like to strip it off and get back to a stock finish with linseed oil but would like to not erase what is left of the cartouche.
Any suggestion as to how to strip it or am I opening a can of worms better left alone?
hmmm try this...

That works. I am no expert and photos lie but I think that could be Tung or Tru Oil finish as opposed to a varnish. The stock looks pretty darned good so I would be hesitant to do anything drastic.

Edit:

Here is my Tipo 2 clone. It is stained darker with a red tint but this wood was finished with Tung oil. If it was in stained walnut it probably would look very similar to yours.
