Default Auction item #6071

Auction item #6071, an '03A4 with an M84 scope, topped out at $9001. Appears to have been completely refinished to me. Any comments?

Appears to me that the CMP auction often tops out 25% or more above other sales?

I’m not an expert but I’ve seen rifles like that at shows (pre Covid) in the $4,000-5,000 or nearby range. Small details can matter like repro scope blocks or refinished etc but $9,000 seems high to me.

Very Rare Rifle from US Arsenal, into Civilian hands in same condition it was in from US Military. With CMP Cert. will pay for itself in the future.

I’ve got one just like it. Paid about 1/4 of that price maybe 2 years ago.

Seems high even for one in nice shape, I gave $700 for mine many years ago but no providence of course and not sure it is completely right so not as good as the one just sold. I think many people just look at it as making a donation by paying more than something would go for in other venues.

One of the most faked rifles, having that CMP Cert yells out this is US Issue, off the shelf CMP M1 Garands going for 3X the amount I paid for them today. Many Parts A4’s rifles out there, all Snipers are copied / faked. Watch what happens to the M1C’s and M1D’s now that CMP is out of them, without the CMP Cert only the most experienced collector will be able to tell which ones are the Fakes.

Look at all the fake German Snipers being sold as original........Great buys
There is a market for reproductions if you can’t afford the Real McCoy, I would like to see a Reproduction of the Jap Arisaka Snipers.

“Deep Pockets”, maybe or maybe not. Depends upon how you define “deep pockets”.

Try this scenario: 75 year-old VN vet who served with 2/17 CAV, 101st ABN Div (Ambl). Feels extremely lucky to have lived past 1970. Just lost his wife of 30 years and realizes, at 75, he will be soon to follow.

Why not $9,000?

The amount paid in the auction notwithstanding. I don't agree that M1903A4's are one of the most faked rifles out there. Maybe one of the most copied or cloned is correct since you can build a fake one w/ the correct type scope mount, modified bolt handle, and relieved stock (bolt clearance). Since the M1903A4 has distinctively oriented receiver marks "Faking" one is not an option like an M1D. Totally agree that a lot of German bolt action sniper rifles out there are faked.
Just my opinion

Airborne,
Mark
