Sounds like it could have been a Type 1 National Match if the star was between the gas cylinder rings, next to the "NM" barrel marking. Might have been worth grabbing even with that TE.

My '41 SA has a 4 54 barrel on it with NM stamped between the gas cylinder rings. Gauged 2+ and 4+ Shoots a 4" group at 200 yards with 168 handloads. Might shoot better after I get used to the old girl ! My first M1.

The star was on the top of the barrel and the NM was on the left side of the barrel
