Default South Store Leon

So on my way to the airport for some hangar flying with the local EAA guys I stopped at Buc-ees in Leeds, AL today (great place to get a breakfast and coffee).

Walking across the parking lot (about a square mile, probably 200 cars and trucks there for those who haven't seen a Buc-ees) I hear someone calling my name.
I turned around to see Leon Rutherford!
I asked where he was headed (He lives in GA by the way); he said "To the promised land, of course" (Alabama football game today).
We blocked cars in the middle of the lot catching up for a while, made my day.
He's doing well, looked well.

Default Leon

Good to hear Leon is doing well.
What a great guy he is.Always had time to chat with me when we met up.
Never could get my name right, called me Ray.
Met a young lady National Park Ranger at Bryce Canyon. She had a Alabama/ Georgia accent.I asked where she was from. She named Leon’s hometown.
I asked her if she knew Leon.Yes,he gave me hunter safety course.
We took a selfie.I sent it to Leon.
“ Ray you stay away from her.”

Leon is a great guy! He was so much fun at the SS. He is a big 1903 guy. cmp had c-stocks years ago and I bought several. Years later he asked me if I knew anyone who had one. So, next trip down to the store I took him one. It was fun to see his eyes light up! Glad he is doing well.

Glad to here he's well!
I'd only heard of him at the South Store, until one morning in April of 2015, when he called me at home, definitely caught me by surprise!
I had sent in an order for an IHC GAP rifle when the CMP put a small number up for mail in lottery orders. A month or two later, on a busy morning as I was loading my truck for work, my phone rang and on the other end the voice said, "Hi this is Leon from the CMP, I'm sorry but we ran out of GAP M1s but I found another rifle I think you might be interested in."
He went on to say, "It's a 3.6 mil. SA with original finish and 3 45 barrel with ME 1 / TE 1, it has type II lockbar sights and NFR stock set. He said it's correct except for having a 43' SA bolt and postwar SA op rod. He said if I want it, he'll ship it to me for the price of a service grade SA.
I was blown away by his awesome customer service and offer! I thanked him gratefully. He also told me he had a special fondness for 1945 made M1s as that is his birth year. About a week later the rifle arrive and was everything he said it was. I got to thank him again in person in 2016 when I made it up to Talladega Park where he was working then.
A true gentleman.

So glad to see some Leon action on here. I'll never forget meeting him for the first time at the South Store back around 2011. He's a true gentlemen and an asset to the shooting sports. I wish there were more Leon's in the world.

Hi Fellow CMP members,

I have known Leon for many years he was always very helpful to most people.
He would also tell you when you were over stepping over the line.
Like, when he saw two guys trying to switch parts on a rifle!

His face ALWAYS lit up when some one brought in some donuts or cookies !

Thanks for reminding me of a truly nice guy,

Leon is a legend at CMP,,, but he finally had to retire because he got tired of hearing how much better looking his brother DON is than him. There was a rumor that Don was better shot than Leon and Leon refused to listen to all the trash talk !!!!
