Default FOIA Request

E-mail works fine. Send to usarmy.redstone.usamc.mbx.foia@army.mil. Include nomenclature of weapon and serial number. You do have to state you are willing to pay $XX for the inquiry, even though they will not charge you. My first request did not have this statement and they rejected my request. That requirement is in an Army regulation that they have to adhere to. Takes about a week or so depending on the number of requests in the queue. Info only goes back to 1995.

1995... well that kills your CMP pistol being in anything but war on terror, so if that is of value , fire away on FOIA requests and if not , move along. Its not like you're going to get the records of WWII and find out your pistol was on Tarawa

They told me 1975 yesterday.

"Sir or Ma'am,

LDAC has received your FOIA request for a Springfield Armory M1 Garand Rifle serial number xxxx Please allow 2 to 3 weeks to receive your response. This request is # 61 in the queue. The DoD Small Arms/Light Weapons Registry history only goes back to 1975 when the Registry was started. There are no commas in the serial numbers in the DoD Registry. Please send all FOIA requests to usarmy.redstone.ldac.mbx.foia@army.mil.

I've been reading about foia's for a while now and think I'm finally going to send for one or more. My question has anyone sent in multiple sn's in one request? Is there a limit per request?

Default FOIARequest

It is 1975 not 1995 as I "fat fingered" but definitely not WWII or beyond.

I sent the info on both of my Garands in one email and I got two separate ones back. I don’t know if there is a limit.

Got my response back. There's only two entries for my rifle. Seems a bit underwhelming.

This letter is in response to your Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request dated
October 6, 2022, reference number AMC FOIA # The request is for ownership history on a Springfield Armory M1 Garand Rifle, serial number
5850969.

The following Information was found in the Department of Defense (DoD) Small
Arms/Light Weapons Registry for a M1 Garand, Caliber .30 Rifle, NSN: 1005-00-674-
1425, Serial Number 5850969. The records for this weapon are listed below in
chronological order:

1. 10 July 2008 - Headquarters (HQ) United States Army Tank-Automotive and
Armaments Command (TACOM), Anniston, Alabama received the weapon.

2. 03 December 2008 - Headquarters (HQ) United States Army Tank-Automotive
and Armaments Command (TACOM), Anniston, Alabama shipped the weapon
outside the Department of Defense (DoD).

If you interpret this response as an adverse action, you have the right to contact the

Army FOIA Public Liaison Officer, Ms. Crystle Poge by email at usarmy.belvoir.hqda-
oaa-ahs.mbx.rmda-foia-public-liaison@army.mil or by phone at (571) 515-0306.

You can include up to 6 serial numbers in one request. They do not all have to be the same type of weapon.

I also got my response today (sent email October 1st).

The following Information was found in the Department of Defense (DoD) Small
Arms/Light Weapons Registry for a M1 Garand Rifle, NSN: 1005-00-674-1425, Serial
Number 3365595. The records for this weapon are listed below in chronological order:

1. 24 April 2018 - Headquarters (HQ) United States Army Tank-Automotive and
Armaments Command (TACOM), Anniston, Alabama received the weapon.

2. 24 April 2018 - Headquarters (HQ) United States Army Tank-Automotive and
Armaments Command (TACOM), Anniston, Alabama shipped the weapon
outside the Department of Defense (DoD).

Seems a bit coincidental, but it could have been a Garand from the Philippines, though what I've read puts the arrival date in the US around January 2018, so not likely.

Regardless, I'm happy with what I've got.
