Default Question about purchasing a 1903

Hello,

I'm a long time lurker, somewhat new member. I have a chance to purchase a 1923 Springfield Armory MFG 1903 which the owner purchased from the CMP once upon a time. He's asking 1500. The barrel gauges out well and the rifle retains its military refinish well and exhibits 95%+ bluing and the stock doesn't have any severe dings or nicks aside from the normal armory ones. Being relatively new to 1903's this pricepoint appears a bit high to me. What is the general thought on pricing when purchasing a 1903? Should I work him down? Sorry for not having any photos my phone was on low battery when i saw it! Its a 1.2 mil serial number.

Maybe a bit high? But that's compared to buying a CMP rifle for less too. Not everybody can get to a CMP store so have to buy on the market. But then maybe it's in the range of the match built rifles? Pics needed for this crowd to really provide you some info.

Being on the West Coast, a visit to the CMP store is unfortunately out of the budget-friendly question. I'll see if I can grab some photos today!

We're going to need a lot more info on this rifle. Pictures would help. What markings on the bolt? What type of stock. Are there stock markings? Barrel markings? Type of finish(Greek black, parkerizing etc.)
$1500 seems high, unless it is in original condition.

$1500 is an excellent price if the rifle is in fine original condition. Being a CMP rifle, however, the likelihood of being in fine original condition is very, very small.

Overpriced. Hard to give any accurate price w/o pictures.

What is the current market for mismatched stock 1903? Seems like the stock is the unicorn these days, be it 1903 or M1?

Welp,

I went back today and the guy apparently sold it to someone for the asking price. Given the information on here and what I was seeing there I feel like I lucked out in not ending up with it. Thankyou again for all of the responses.

On to the next one!

Are you in Ca? Do you follow calguns.net ?
I've seen them come up from time to time from $800 and up. To me, $1500 is too high for a CMP 1903, even on the secondary market and even in Ca.
But that being said, you don't see them out here to often, but you can buy one and have it shipped to your dealer here for the transfer.

I think all you missed out on was getting gouged.
Even if you live on the west coast, occasionally a round trip ticket can be had for $400 and if you buy more than one rifle when the South store reopens, that would be cheaper and pay for a motel and a rental car too.. My 1918 manufacturer 1903 is an example of what you can get for $750
